“One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin.”
Already the very first sentence of Kafka's iconic parable opens up a universe of fear and alienation. Gregor Samsa, a salesman who lives with his parents and sister and supports them financially, initially considers his involuntary metamorphosis to be temporary, and only slowly comes to terms with its various consequences. He has to give up his job, retreats to his room, and becomes increasingly isolated from the outside world. Unsentimental and then again full of self-doubt and world-weariness, he observes his changing physicality. In a series of transformations, questions arise about loneliness, change, identity and normality.
Award-winning actor and narrator Ulrich Matthes uses his unmistakable voice to take us into Gregor Samsa's increasingly acute and desperate situation.
