Terre Thaemlitz is a mutlimedia producer, author, lecturer, DJ and operator of the record label Comatonse. Also known as DJ Sprinkles, Terre Thaemlitz has been working since the early 1990s with a critical eye on questions of identity politics at the intersection of gender, sexuality, class and linguistics. Thaemlitz refuses to describe herself as an artist and prefers to call herself a cultural critic. Nevertheless, Terre Thaemlitz is best known as an artist working in music, with over 15 solo albums released on labels such as Mille Plaeteaux, Mule Musiq and Comatonse. His texts on music and culture have been published internationally in a number of books, academic journals and magazines and propagate a non-essentialist view of transgenderism and queerness. His work manifests itself in performances, lectures, DJ sets, video works and essays and over the past decades Thaemlitz has received invitations to venues such as the Taipei Biennale, the Berliner Festspiele, Documenta 14 in Kassel and the Unsound Festival in Krakow.
