Sex mit Ted Cruz!

A monologue for and with Michael Neuenschwander
BY LUKAS BÄRFUSS
COMMISSIONED WORK FOR THE SCHAUSPIELHAUS ZÜRICH
DIRECTED BY: WOJTEK KLEMM

In politics, it is not uncommon to see a clear position as more of a fashion accessory. After all, being spineless can help one's career. But, the shamelessness of US politicians in particular is a peculiarity – one that is reluctantly fascinating! Coupled with the image of a strong man and refined with a dash of paraded religiosity, an indecent opportunist becomes a rebellious hero who finally says what everyone is just thinking. Right?

Writer and intellectual Lukas Bärfuss writes a solo play about turncoats for his friend and actor Michael Neuenschwander. It will be premiered at the Schauspielhaus Zürich by director Wojtek Klemm, who sees the theatre as a political place. Wojtek Klemm was born in Poland, grew up in Germany, and lives in Switzerland.

Who is Ted Cruz?

Ted Cruz has been a senator for Texas since 2013. He gained international recognition in 2016 as a presidential candidate in the U.S. primaries. After losing to Donald Trump, he initially refused to endorse him and called on voters at the Republican National Convention to "vote your conscience"—implicitly urging them not to support Trump. However, he later became one of Trump's allies and backed his efforts to challenge Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Cruz holds right-wing conservative positions, strongly influenced by his religious beliefs: he denies climate change, advocates for strict immigration policies, supports tax cuts for the wealthy, and aligns himself with the "Pro-Life" movement.
