“Who is the fairest of them all?” – Because a talking mirror fails to answer this question to the satisfaction of a stepmother eaten up with envy, she decides to bump off her stepdaughter. Upon which said stepdaughter seeks refuge with seven dwarfs, who are happy to take her in – under the condition that she take care of their housekeeping. But the stepmother continues to go after her, and eventually succeeds... stop stop stop! This story has been told in this way often enough. But what kind of mirror would presume to play the judge in a beauty contest? Does beauty not lie in the eye of the beholder? And would the seven gentlemen still have taken in Snow White if she hadn’t lifted a finger to take care of their all-male flatshare? What would happen if you were to flip the genders in the tale? How would the story end for a young hero whose beauty is a thorn in his family’s side?
For the first time since his very first piece of work for a German-speaking city theatre, Nicolas Stemann directs a play for the whole family. The childish anarchy and joy of association that pervade all of his productions has found a genre, with the fairy tale, that is by no means only reserved for children.
