Jan Bosse was born in Stuttgart and studied Theatre, German and Art History at the University of Erlangen before studying Directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" in Berlin. From 2000 to 2005, Jan Bosse was a resident director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. He has also worked regularly at the Schauspielhaus Zürich, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Thalia Theater Hamburg, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Schauspiel Köln, Schauspiel Stuttgart, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, and from 2007 to 2013 as a resident director at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. In 2007, he was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen with a production of Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werthers [The Sorrows of Young Werther] at the Maxim Gorki Theater and William Shakespeare's Viel Lärm um nichts [Much Ado About Nothing] at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The second invitation followed in 2008 with a production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. Most recently, in 2017, he directed Die Welt im Rücken at the Burgtheater Wien, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Melle, with which he was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen for the third time in 2018. After Mass für Mass [Measure for Measure] (2018), he returns to the Schauspielhaus Zürich after six years with Die schmutzigen Hände [Dirty Hands].
