Mathias Weibel

Born in 1963 in Bern, Mathias Weibel lives in Zurich. He plays both modern and baroque violin and is at home in a wide variety of musical styles. He studied in Bern, Florence, and Vienna, and has performed with numerous ensembles including Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hespèrion XX, and La Folia Madrid.

Weibel is a founding member of Ensemble Turicum, a member of the Kammerorchester Basel, and director of the arcobaleno string orchestra in Zurich. At the Schauspielhaus Zürich, he has appeared as a musician in several productions by Christoph Marthaler. Originally from Bern, Weibel is a baroque violin specialist with extensive experience across musical genres—ranging from Argentine tango to collaborations with Spanish flamenco musicians.

In recent years, he has worked closely with director Thom Luz as a theatre musician, arranger, and pianist, with appearances at venues such as Gessnerallee Zürich, Theater Basel, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Staatstheater Hannover, and the Deutsches Theater Berlin. In Luz’s productions When I Die and Unusual Weather Phenomena Project, he performed at international festivals and theatres including Gessnerallee Zürich, Théâtre National de Strasbourg, the Autorentheatertage at Deutsches Theater Berlin, and Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre.

At Theater Basel, he appeared in the production LSD mein Sorgenkind. At Schauspielhaus Zürich, he collaborated with directors Christoph Marthaler, Stefan Pucher, and choreographer Meg Stuart. Together with director Jonas Knecht, he worked on the productions Vrenelis Gärtli and Gallus.

Mathias Weibel has been involved in nearly all of Thom Luz’s productions as musical director and/or on-stage musician. In 2015, he received the City of Zurich Recognition Award for his musical direction of Luz’s When I Die.
