Benjamin von Blomberg studied historical musicology, German studies, and business administration in Hamburg. During his studies he co-founded the free opera group, evviva la diva with director Benedikt von Peter, serving as a producer and dramaturg for productions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. From 2006 to 2010 he worked as a dramaturg at the Thalia Theater under artistic directors Ulrich Khuon and later Joachim Lux. As of 2010 he worked as a freelance dramaturg in Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, at the Salzburger Festspiele and in Zurich in regular collaboration with directors Stefan Pucher, Frank Abt, Benedikt von Peter, and Nicolas Stemann. A has maintained a working relationship of many years with the latter.
Before working as a dramaturg, von Blomberg began his doctorate under Peter Petersen on the role of music in the work of Elfriede Jelinek. With Nicolas Stemann he subsequently developed multiple premieres of her texts, and they were invited several times to the Berliner Theatertreffen. For his work on Faust I & II, in 2012 von Blomberg was selected as Dramaturg of the Year by the journal Theater heute. In the same year he became Head Dramaturg and Director of the Acting Division at Theater Bremen (Artistic Director Michael Börgerding) and in 2015 Head Dramaturg at the Münchner Kammerspiele (Artistic Director Matthias Lilienthal). Further, he publishes in professional journals and is a regular juror and lecturer, for example at the Körber Studio Junge Regie and in collaboration with the Goethe Institute Amsterdam.
Since the 2019/20 season, he is with Nicolas Stemann Artistic Director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich.
