Muriel Gerstner (*1962 in Basel) trained as a theater painter before studying stage design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna under Axel Manthey. Since 1990, she has worked as a freelance stage and costume designer, collaborating with renowned directors such as Karin Henkel, Barbara Frey, Jossi Wieler, Sebastian Nübling, Roger Vontobel, and Johan Simons.
Her work has been featured at notable venues, including Schauspielhaus Zürich, Münchner Kammerspiele, Stuttgart State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Theater Basel, the Salzburg Festival, and the Ruhrtriennale. In 2006, her set design for Händl Klaus’ Dunkel lockende Welt directed by Sebastian Nübling, was named “Set Design of the Year” by the critics’ poll in Theater heute magazine.
Her productions have been invited to numerous national and international festivals, including seven selections for the Berlin Theatertreffen. In 2007, she represented Switzerland at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space with her work Zu bösen Häusern gehen.
