Human Rights Watch presents: Philippe Sands – «38 LONDRES STREET»

author Philippe Sands in conversation with Yasmine Ahmed
lecture: Nancy Mensah-Offei
A co-operation with Human Rights Watch

Philippe Sands is an internationally acclaimed British and French lawyer, author and law professor who regularly appears as counsel and advocate before international courts and tribunals, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Sands was born in London in 1960 to Jewish parents.

After studying in London and Cambridge, he spent a year as a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School before being called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1985. An impressive academic and legal career followed. In addition to numerous articles and reports, he has published 17 books.

Following the success of the 2016 bestseller EAST WEST STREET: ON THE ORIGINS OF GENOCIDE AND CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, in which Philippe Sands examines the origins of international criminal law and the development of key legal concepts such as genocide and crimes against humanity, the author's new work, 38 LONDRES STREET, is dedicated to the trail of two of the 20th century's most brutal criminals: Walter Rauff, a German SS commander, and the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who was arrested in London in 1998 and charged with crimes against humanity and genocide.

In this unique blend of memoir, courtroom drama and historical reassessment, Philippe Sands provides an exclusive insight into the Pinochet trial – in which he acted as legal representative for Human Rights Watch – and reveals the dictator's unexpected link to a leading Nazi.
