Raised in Kreuzlingen, Jossi Wieler studied directing at the Theatre Department of Tel Aviv University. For over forty years, he has directed productions at prestigious German-speaking theaters, including multiple productions at the Salzburg Festival. His works have been invited to numerous international festivals and have often been featured at the Berlin Theatertreffen.
In 2002, Wieler was awarded the Konrad Wolf Prize by the Berlin Academy of Arts, followed by the German Critics' Prize in 2005 and the Nestroy Prize in 2009 for his staging of Elfriede Jelinek's Rechnitz (The Exterminating Angel) at the Munich Kammerspiele. Since 1994, he has also directed operas in collaboration with Sergio Morabito, earning accolades such as “Production of the Year” for several of their works. Wieler and Morabito were named Directing Team of the Year in 2002 and received the Faust Theater Prize in 2006 and 2012.
From 2011 to 2018, Jossi Wieler served as artistic director of the Stuttgart State Opera, which was named Opera House of the Year in 2016. In 2020, he was honored with Switzerland's highest theater distinction, the Grand Prix Theater / Hans Reinhart Ring. Most recently, his production of Jelinek's Angabe der Person at the Deutsches Theater Berlin won the 2023 Nestroy Prize for "Best Production in German-Speaking Regions."
At Schauspielhaus Zürich, he last directed in 2002 with Jon Fosse’s Winter.
